Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer on Tuesday touted Democrat Ralph Northam's election as governor as proof Virginia is "a wall against Trump and Trumpism."
Signer was critical of Trump in the days following the violence in Charlottesville after the president criticized the "egregious display of hatred, bigotry, violence — on many sides."
Signer and other critics said Trump was equating white nationalists protesting the removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee with those protesting against them in Charlottesville.
Signer continued his Twitter screed against Trump, calling the vote as "historic" as Trump's election and a rejection against his comments on Charlottesville.
