Chelsea Manning is embracing a platform of "radical change" in her bid for the Senate, including cutting defense spending to pay for free healthcare for all and closing prisons, she told The Washington Post.
"We need to start closing prisons. We need to start releasing prisoners," Manning told the Post.
And Obamacare? It didn't go far enough, said Manning. Free healthcare for all, paid for by defense spending, Manning told the Post.
That's part of the ultra-progressive platform Manning is taking against Democratic incumbent Sen. Ben Cardin — and a handful of other Democratic hopefuls — in the Maryland June primary.
Manning announced her candidacy two weeks ago.
"The establishment needs to be challenged, and it needs to be challenged in their footholds and in the places where they feel safe," Manning told the Post.
Bradley Manning was convicted by court martial in 2013 for violating the Espionage Act after turning over 750,000 classified or sensitive military documents to WikiLeaks.
A day after his sentencing to 35 years in military prison, Manning announced he wanted to become a female and be known as Chelsea.
President Barack Obama commuted Manning's sentence right before leaving office last year, soliciting this response from President Donald Trump.
Now Manning, who said she's no traitor, wants to join the Senate, where, if elected, she'd be privy to more classified information.
"Given the circumstances that I was in and everything that I knew at the time, I did what I felt was the right decision to make. I can't go back and change that," Manning told the Post.
