White House chief of staff John Kelly has been given the job of guiding President Donald Trump's immigration proposals through Congress ahead of the 2018 midterm elections, CNN reported Monday.
The retired marine general will lead a Tuesday meeting with Trump and lawmakers at the White House to discuss the next steps on immigration reform, CNN reported, citing unnamed sources — a role senior policy adviser Stephen Miller would have been expected to take.
Kelly served as Trump's first homeland security secretary and spearheaded immigration efforts there in the first months of the administration, the outlet noted.
Kelly is "more of an adult," one source told the outlet, and Trump believes with Kelly in charge, there is a better chance of getting something done, CNN reported.
Lawmakers and the White House are hoping to strike a deal on the legal status of so-called Dreamers protected under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Trump is pushing for authorization of a border wall in any deal, CNN noted.
