A Democratic senator warned his colleagues in a speech Thursday that offering free healthcare is not always the smartest move politically.

According to the Washington Examiner, Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., spoke at the Washington Court Hotel in the nation's capital and offered some advice on several topics.

"We can be bold by saying we can make healthcare affordable, without having to say we'll make it free," Coons said.

"If we want to a move from a party in the minority committed to 'the resistance' to a party of governance, we have to act like it. I understand the strategy of racing farther and farther left in a 24-7, talking head, social media chaos, controversial, combative world — pie in the sky policies and extreme rhetoric stand out, they stick."

Coons noted those types of policies and arguments do not always equate to winning elections.

"So, instead of having something that makes a great Twitter hashtag and gets you on Rachel Maddow, we need to have something that fires people up and is policy position we can actually defend like dump Trump's immigration policy," he said.

Some Democrats, including the left-leaning Center for American Progress, have advocated for free healthcare for all Americans. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., unveiled a plan last fall that would provide Medicare for all.
