The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee gave muted support Thursday for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has experienced a tumultuous week because of the ongoing Russia investigation.
"Yeah, I think so," Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said when asked if he supports Rosenstein. "But that doesn't mean that I think he's doing the right thing."
Politico reported on Grassley's comments.
Later in the interview, Grassley addressed the Department of Justice's delays in handing over requested documents to congressional investigators. After months of waiting, the DOJ this week gave the House Intelligence Committee access to an FBI document that outlined how the Russia investigation began in 2016.
"I think all of the Justice Department, under Republicans and Democrats, do not keep their promise to us when they make a statement [about providing requested information to Congress] when they're up for confirmation," Grassley said.
"They all turn out to be liars. And they ought to really say 'maybe' if they want to be honest."
It was reported that Rosenstein signed off on the Michael Cohen raids that took place earlier this week. Cohen is President Donald Trump's personal lawyer.
Some reports say that Trump might be considering firing Rosenstein, who is supervising the DOJ's Russia investigation because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from it after he did work for the Trump campaign.
