The majority of Senate Democrats' staffers are white women, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's office announced Friday.
The Washington Post reports that 54 percent of the staffers are women and 46 percent are men.
Other key findings in the study:
- 68 percent are white.
- 32 percent are "non-Caucasian," which includes people who identify as African-American, Latino, Asian-Pacific, Native American, and Middle Eastern/North African.
- Sixteen of the Democratic Party's 46 senators are female.
"As we continue the full-court press to make the Senate a more diverse place, this survey will be important to help us track our progress," Schumer said in a statement, the Post reports.
"The more diverse the Senate is, the better it can serve our diverse country."
Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., said in May she is working to address the party's shortfall of minorities serving in staff positions.
