Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., is warning about personal DNA testing kits and allowing companies access to such private information.
Schumer issued two tweets on Monday cautioning consumers to be careful:
The tweets follow a Sunday press conference where Schumer said it was unclear what companies do with the DNA data they collect from clients anxious to know about their ancestry, the New York Post reported.
"Many don't realize that their sensitive information may end up in the hands of many other third-party companies," Schumer said.
Schumer is calling for an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission, the newspaper said.
However, the Post noted Ancestry DNA said it does not sell data without customers' approval. And another company, My Heritage, said it has never sold or licensed data "to any third party," according to the newspaper.
