Columba Bush, wife of presidential hopeful Jeb Bush, opened her own Twitter and Instagram accounts on Friday.
With the
Twitter handle @ColumbaBush, Bush's profile description says "Proud Mother, Grandmother, and Wife of @JebBush. Advocate for Domestic Violence and Drug Prevention, the Arts."
Her Instagram account has identically the same description.
Both accounts include a link to the Right to Rise PAC, which is Jeb Bush's super-PAC.
Columba Bush's first tweet was about an upcoming event on domestic violence this weekend — in Iowa, the first caucus state.
Politico is reporting that Columba Bush is raising her profile in an attempted outreach to Hispanics. She will use her Twitter account to reach out to the Latino community, in both English and Spanish. The Latino community is reportedly very active in social media.
"This is a really important first step. It's beyond dispute that Hispanic voters are more and more important in each election, and we need to capture at least 40 percent of that vote," Jesse Manzano-Plaza, a former Bush administration staffer and political consultant with Miami Beach-based LSN Communication, told Politico.
"For Columba Bush, social media is perfect. It’s no secret she’s not as comfortable as Gov. Bush addressing a crowd. But social media helps people who are more shy or less extroverted reach out like never before. This just didn’t happen 10 years ago," Manzano-Plaza said.
