Questions about loyalty and the Russian investigation led to President Donald Trump's firing of now former FBI director James Comey, according to a CNN report.
The network's Jake Tapper cites a source close to Comey as saying Trump had concerns about the longtime director, including the fact that he had not assured Trump he would stay loyal to him and that the bureau was pushing ahead with its investigation into whether Trump's presidential campaign colluded with Russia.
Trump told reporters Wednesday Comey was simply "not doing a good job" before he fired him Tuesday afternoon.
The president has said countless times that there was no collusion between his campaign and Russia, a claim backed up by officials in the U.S. intelligence community. The FBI, however, is said to be ramping up its investigation into whether anything illegal took place.
Trump aired his thoughts on the matter Wednesday morning via his Twitter account, saying Comey had lost the confidence of people in Washington. "James Comey will be replaced by someone who will do a far better job, bringing back the spirit and prestige of the FBI," Trump wrote.
