Cory Booker used Donald Trump as target practice to further his candidacy as a Democratic vice presidential nominee.

Sen. Booker, D-NJ, and a former mayor of Newark, campaigned for Hillary Clinton and used the opportunity to take some shots at Trump, using rhetoric that sounded a lot like President Barack Obama.

Trump is "an affront and an insult to our higher angels and our best selves," Booker said at the rally in Newark on Wednesday, reported The Hill. "We have Abraham Lincoln saying, 'with malice towards none' and Donald Trump saying 'with hate for all.'"

Speculation has centered on Booker — among others — for vice president given his youth, strong following on social media, and being an African-American. And he took the opportunity to heap praise on the presumptive Democratic nominee, who was at the event.

"This is a person who has gone above and beyond herself for making this a better country," The Hill quoted Booker. "I've stood with this woman all over this country now and I've seen the way she talks to folks. She looks at them and says, 'we will rise.'"

Booker is connected to Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, who has ascended into a top adviser role on Team Trump and was recently profiled in a Real Clear Politics piece. Kushner held a fundraiser for Booker in 2013, and Booker attended Kushner's wedding to Ivanka Trump.
