CPAC Straw Poll: 86 Back Trump; 70 Support Twitter Use

Eight-six percent of those attending the Conservative Political Action Conference this week approve of President Donald Trump's performance so far in the White House — and 70 percent support his using Twitter, according to the CPAC straw poll results released Saturday.

"Donald Trump is already doing the things that the conservative movement wants to get done," Matt Schlapp, chairman of the American Conservative Union, which sponsors the conference, said after the results were presented.

Jim McLaughlin, whose New York-based research firm conducted the survey of the 1,447 attendees, said that "in many ways, Donald Trump is the conservative movement, and the conservative movement is Donald Trump."

Here are the results from the poll, conducted during the session — which began on Wednesday — at National Harbor outside Washington:

Do you approve of Donald Trump's performance as president?

  • Approve: 86 percent.
  • Disapprove: 12 percent.

Do you approve of Trump's Twitter use?

  • Approve: 70 percent.
  • Disapprove: 28 percent.

Is President Trump realigning the conservative movement?

  • Agree: 80 percent.
  • Disagree: 15 percent.

Is the U.S. going in the right or wrong direction?

  • Wrong direction: 47 percent.
  • Right direction: 44 percent.

What are the issues most important to you?

  • Economy: 46 percent.
  • National security: 29 percent.
  • Social and cultural issues: 13 percent.
  • Honesty and integrity in government: 11 percent.

Which issues should Trump most follow through on?

  • Reforming tax code: 33 percent.
  • Repealing and replacing Obamacare: 28 percent.
  • Building wall on U.S. border with Mexico: 17 percent.
  • Temporarily halting immigration from terrorist countries: 12 percent.
  • Infrastructure improvement: 8 percent.

Republicans in Congress …

  • Should support Trump: 67 percent.
  • Are doing enough to support Trump: 22 percent.
  • Should oppose Trump: 8 percent.

Neil Gorsuch's nomination to Supreme Court?

  • Approve: 94 percent.
  • Disapprove: 2 percent.

More or less likely to support a senator who opposes Gorsuch's nomination?

  • Less likely: 86 percent.
  • More likely: 6 percent.

Favor or oppose "nuclear option" to break a Democratic filibuster on Gorsuch's nomination?

  • Favor: 75 percent.
  • Oppose: 18 percent.

Favor or oppose cutting federal funds to "sanctuary cities" or similar institutions?

  • Favor: 91 percent.
  • Oppose: 7 percent.

Approve of Trump's temporary travel ban?

  • Approve: 81 percent.
  • Disapprove: 18 percent.

The CPAC straw poll was co-sponsored by The Washington Times.

Besides President Trump, other speakers during the conference included EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz — and White House chief strategist Steve Bannon and Chief of Staff Reince Priebus.
