If Sen. David Perdue has a shot of pulling out a win in Georgia's election, it would lie in still-outstanding ballots from members of the military, Sen. Kevin Cramer said Wednesday.
"Why not come down to the last minute of the runoff and see who is going to control the Senate in a year like we've had?" the North Dakota Republican said on Fox Business' "Mornings With Maria." "I'm still hopeful, I'm still holding out for those military ballots that haven't been opened and counted yet."
Newsmax and Decision HQ called the race for Perdue's Democrat challenger, Jon Ossoff early Wednesday after Ossoff's lead widened to more than 16,000 votes. Ossoff has issued a video thanking voters for the win. Other media outlets are still saying the race remains too close to call.
With Democrats holding the majority in the Senate, there are several major issues at stake, including the elimination of the filibuster, packing the courts, and adding the District of Columbia as a state, said Cramer, and it is a "frightening situation" for that to happen.
Meanwhile, there has been some talk about moderate Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., potentially voting along with Republicans on some issues, but that's a "lot to count on," said Cramer.
"The majority has a lot to give a senator," said Cramer. "They have a lot that they can entice them with like chairmanships. I would rather make sure that David Perdue comes back after reelection and we keep our majority."
Cramer said he's also concerned about losing the Senate majority because Democrats had voted unanimously against many of President Donald Trump's nominees.
"If we lose the majority, we lose that leverage over the administration," he said. "When it comes to confirming or the advise and consent rule, which is very important in the Senate and unique to the Senate — if we lose that leverage, those things could even be worse."
