Sens. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., and Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., told Newsmax on Thursday it is important to preserve women’s sports for biological women.
“It's dangerous to have men in the locker room, not to mention extremely uncomfortable,” Lummis said on “National Report.” “It's ridiculous to put the superior physiology that men enjoy in competition with women. It's just common sense to have women's sports just for women.”
The House passed "The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act” on Tuesday that would ban transgender athletes from competing in women's and girls' sports at schools that receive federal funding. The vote was 218-206.
Lummis and Tuberville, who co-sponsored the bill in the Senate, hit back at Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., who said “bigoted folks love this bill. Assaulters love this bill.”
“I started coaching back years ago when Title IX started, and it gave many opportunities to young girls and women to enhance their future,” Tuberville said. “It gave them an opportunity the same as boys had. And you learn a lot from sports. Now the Democratic Party wants to tear it down.”
Lummis said ensuring men compete as men and women compete with women does not make her a bigot.
“I am not a bigot. In fact, I'm angry,” Lummis said. “As someone who went to high school before Title IX and did not have opportunities to play competitive sports, I see what Title IX has done for my daughter and generations after her. It's made an opportunity for women to learn competition, hard work, discipline, getting up early, losing and staying with it. The advantages of sports, competitive sports for everyone builds character. I want to protect Title IX for the very people it was intended to protect, and that's biological girls and women.”
