Actress Cynthia Nixon — who is challenging New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic gubernatorial primary — said Thursday the incumbent went on the attack in their first debate "because he has a record that's very hard to defend."

In an interview on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," the former "Sex and the City" star charged "since taking office, [Cuomo] has governed like a Republican."

"I think that Andrew Cuomo was looking to attack anything about me that he could think of because he has a record that's very hard to defend," she asserted.

"Particularly when you talk about how he has handed over control of the New York State Senate to the Republicans for the last 7½ years," she added. "Basically, what he's done is incentivized a group of Democratic state senators to vote with the Republicans and give them the majority."

According to RealClearPolitics' aggregate of polls in the New York Democratic primary race, Cuomo holds a commanding 33.5 percentage point lead.
