Fox News' Dana Perino said on 'The Five' on Tuesday the rules are different when we take in Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's comments vs. that of his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.
Reacting to Tuesday's apparent joke about the "Second Amendment people" assassinating Mrs. Clinton, Perino said:
"Imagine, if [Hillary Clinton] had said, or somebody had said, that about Donald Trump –– like carelessly say 'Oh, maybe someone will assassinate him '–– we would all be going crazy."
Trump has made numerous statements in recent weeks that can be considered controversial. His latest ambiguous public comment that created a firestorm Tuesday was referring to the right to bear arms and what gun rights supporters might do to protect it.
"Hillary wants to abolish — essentially abolish the Second Amendment," Trump said. "By the way, if she gets to pick, if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don't know."
Trump's campaign responded to the notion from "dishonest media" that their candidate was alluding to gun violence as opposed to a power of the vote, issuing a statement Tuesday night.
"It's called the power of unification — 2nd Amendment people have amazing spirit and are tremendously unified, which gives them great political power," Jason Miller, Trump's senior communications advisor, wrote. "And this year, they will be voting in record numbers, and it won't be for Hillary Clinton, it will be for Donald Trump."
