The Pulitzer-prize winning journalist who first obtained President Donald Trump's 2005 tax return that was revealed Tuesday night on MSNBC's "Rachel Maddow Show" suggested Trump himself could've leaked the document.
In a surprising assertion on Maddow's show, David Cay Johnston said Trump has "leaked all sorts of things."
"Donald has a long history of leaking material about himself when he thinks it's in his interest," he said, adding:
"It's a possibility, and it could have been leaked by someone at his direction. With Donald, you know, you never know. Yes, I think I have to include that in the list of possibilities of where it came from," he said of the document given to him, adding there was nothing illegal about obtaining the document.
"There's absolutely nothing improper about journalists, if you haven't solicited something, getting it over the transom," he said.
The White House, in a statement released ahead of Maddow's show, said Trump reported $150 million in income and $38 million in paid taxes in 2005.
