Ex-Nixon Aide Gergen on Trump: 'We're in Impeachment Territory'

President Donald Trump's actions, if true, could be grounds for impeachment, David Gergen, former aide to President Richard Nixon, told CNN Tuesday night.

"After watching the Clinton impeachment, I thought I'd never see another one. But I think we're in impeachment territory now, for the first time," Gergen said in a panel discussion on CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360."

Gergen is a senior political analyst for CNN and served as a presidential adviser to former Presidents Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton.

"I think obstruction of justice was the number one charge against Nixon that brought him down. Obstruction of justice was the No. 1 charge against Bill Clinton which led to his indictment in the House," Gergen said.

The timing of Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey is suspect, he added.

"I'm a lapsed lawyer. I cannot tell you whether it meets all the legal definitions. But from a lay point of view, it looks like he was trying to impede the investigation," he continued.

"He was using his power to do that, and when James Comey didn't go along with him, when he wasn't his boy, he fired him, which I think is also relevant to the question of what he was trying to do.

"From my point of view, this is of enormous consequence for his presidency. I think if you look at the three bombshells we've had this past week . . . What we see is a presidency that's starting to come apart," he added.
