Parkland, Florida high school student turned gun control activist David Hogg called out Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain on Twitter Friday, asking why he accepted contributions from the National Rifle Association, The Hill reported.

McCain tweeted Friday about an article he wrote about a public river development project in Phoenix.

Hogg replied:

McCain, a Vietnam veteran and former presidential nominee, is the top lawmaker in Congress of campaign contributions from the NRA, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, receiving nearly $8 million from the organization during his career.

Hogg has been on a crusade for enhanced gun control after surviving the February school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where 17 people lost their lives. He has singled out the NRA's influence on lawmakers since the shooting in his call for tougher restrictions on weapons.

McCain, diagnosed last year with brain cancer, has reportedly not traveled to Washington this year.
