Political activist and mass shooting survivor David Hogg defended calling House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi "old," saying Congress needs more younger people.

In a recent New York Magazine story, Hogg said Pelosi and other aging Democrats should step aside to let the younger generation in.

"The reason Republicans are successful right now is because they're empowering young people," Hogg said. "Older Democrats just won't move the [expletive] off the plate and let us take control. Nancy Pelosi is old."

The comment drew some criticism from Democrats, so Hogg posted several tweets to explain his remark.

"I said 'Pelosi is old,'" Hogg wrote in one tweet. "Trump is old. [Utah GOP Sen. Orrin] Hatch is old. [Texas GOP Sen.] Ted Cruz and [Texas Democratic Rep.] Beto O'Rourke are both in the younger side of American leadership.

"We can go younger. Dems need to allow young people to seize leadership opportunities like the Republicans have with people like Rubio, Ryan etc."

In another tweet, Hogg said he is not a proponent of age limits for politicians.

"I don't endorse age limits," Hogg wrote. ". We need experience and wisdom in our leadership. But, we also need a representative government, which means younger leaders need to be given a chance."

Hogg was present during the deadly shooting earlier this year at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and emerged as an activist advocating for a variety of issues, including gun control.
