Former talk-show host David Letterman took a shot at Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in an interview on Friday, calling the billionaire "a damaged human."

I've known Donald Trump for a long time," Letterman told The New York Times, while promoting a National Geographic show he's involved in. "I always thought he was exactly what New York City needed to have: the big blowhard billionaire."

The comedian then moved on to Trump's various controversies, particularly when in November 2015 Trump appeared to mock New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski, who has a congenital condition that affects his joints.

"I thought, if this was somebody else — if this was a member of your family or a next-door neighbor, a guy at work — you would immediately distance yourself from that person. And that's what I thought would happen," Letterman added.

"Because if you can do that in a national forum, that says to me that you are a damaged human being. If you can do that, and not apologize, you're a person to be shunned."

The Clinton Campaign released an ad in June accusing Trump of mocking Kovaleski for his disability.

Trump denied the allegation, saying "Serge Kovaleski must think a lot of himself if he thinks I remember him from decades ago — if I ever met him at all, which I doubt I did. He should stop using his disability to grandstand and get back to reporting for a paper that is rapidly going down the tubes."

Kovaleski claims he and Trump did know each other due to his regular coverage of the businessman for years with the Times. Politifact eventually rated the ad's claim at "true."
