Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York will meet with lawmakers in Washington, D.C. next week, The Hill is reporting.
It will mark her first trip to Capitol Hill since defeating Rep. Joe Crowley, D-N.Y. in a June primary. Crowley, who represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, had been considered a possible candidate to become the next House Speaker if Democrats regain the majority in November.
Ocasio-Cortez will meet with select members of Congress, as well as some outside groups that have backed her campaign.
"The purpose of the trip is to gain insight from our friends with similar visions for America, especially those with different perspectives and experiences," a source told The Hill.
Among those she will be meeting with is Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., who had endorsed both Ocasio-Cortez and Crowley in the primary, according to the website.
In a fundraising email pitch for Khanna, Ocasio-Cortez asked supporters to donate to Khanna’s campaign.
"Before we won our primary on Tuesday, only ONE member of Congress acknowledged my existence: Ro Khanna," Ocasio-Cortez wrote. "For us to turn Congress around, we need to support and expand that movement. That's why … I’m going to ask you to give (if you can) to Ro’s and my campaign."
