Democrats, critical of the president's policies, have invited immigrants and Muslim-Americans to join them for President Donald Trump's speech Tuesday night, CNN reported.
Rep. Nydia Velazquez, D-N.Y., is expected to bring Hameed Darweesh, an immigrant from Iraq. He was detained at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York in early January after Trump's executive order temporarily restricting travel from seven Muslim-majority nations.
Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairwoman Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham from New Mexico said 10 of her group's members invited people who had been or could be personally impacted by Trump, including two children of recently deported immigrants and a green card holder from Sudan, according to the news network.
Rep. Luis Gutiérrez, D-Ill., who is a member of the caucus, is bringing an immigration attorney, whose parents are Palestinian refugees
And Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin's guest will be Aaima Sayed, an "American-Muslim Dreamer" and medical student who was granted legal status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), CNN reported.
Politico noted New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler, Colorado Rep. Jared Polis and Wisconsin Rep. Mark Pocan also plan to bring DACA recipients to hear the president's address.
