The Democrats' lead in the midterm elections over Republicans has shrunk to 5 points, a new poll showed Sunday.
The Fox News survey found 46 percent of voters said they'd pick Democratic candidates in the midterms, while 41 percent said they planned to pull the lever for GOP candidates.
A Fox News poll in October had Democrats ahead by 15 points on the generic ballot.
"Just winning the popular national vote is not enough to flip the House," GOP pollster Daron Shaw told Fox News. "Given the GOP's districting advantages, data from 2012 and 2014 show the Democrats need an edge of at least 5 points to bring the majority into play."
In other findings, the poll found:
- 36 percent of voters say they're more enthusiastic about going to the polls this year than in past midterm elections, 12 percent are less enthusiastic and 51 percent say they feel about the same as in past years.
- 52 percent say they're less optimistic about the direction of the country compared to last year; 47 percent are more nervous, while 40 percent are confident, about the economy.
The poll's margin of error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.
