President-elect Donald Trump will reach across the aisle to work alongside Democrats, according to a Gallup poll released Monday.
- 49 percent said Republicans would work with Democrats in Congress.
- 58 percent said Trump and Democrats will cooperate.
According to Gallup, the American people were more confident about bipartisan cooperation after President Barack Obama's election in 2008.
"These results, from Gallup's Nov. 9-13 post-election survey, are updates to similar questions Gallup asked after the 2008 and 2012 elections," Gallup's Frank Newport wrote. "Americans were significantly more hopeful in 2008 about the possibilities of newly elected President Barack Obama than they are now about Trump. Eight in 10 Americans at the time expected Obama would cooperate with the opposing party in Congress."
Respondents also said Democrats were more likely than Republicans to "make [a] sincere effort" to work with their ideological opponents.
With a Republican controlled House and Senate, Trump will likely face less Congressional opposition to his policies than Obama did, "but Democrats in Congress will still be needed for a number of actions on the Trump agenda to become law, meaning that cooperation between the two parties will continue to be important," Newport noted.
According to a Gallup poll from September, the majority of Americans would rather their political leaders compromise than stick to their principles in order to get things done.
This poll was conducted by phone from Nov. 9-13 among 1,019 American adults, with a margin of error of +/- 4 percentage points.
