House conservatives could file documents as early as Monday to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein over his role in the Russia probe, despite Friday's indictment of 12 Russian operatives for interfering in the 2012 presidential election.

"It has not been filed today," Ben Williamson, a spokesman for North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows, a co-leader of the renewed effort, told Politico.

He declined to rule out whether Meadows might make the filing next week.

Meadows, chairman of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, had the impeachment document with him on the House floor as Rosenstein announced the indictments, according to Politico.

He and Freedom Caucus founder, Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, are behind the new push to oust Rosenstein, 53, who was named to the post last year by President Donald Trump.

Conservatives have long accused Rosenstein of slowing their investigation into FBI agents they say are biased against the president.

Democrats countered that Republicans are targeting Rosenstein to undermine special counsel Robert Mueller.

He reports to Rosenstein, who took over supervising the Moscow probe after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself in March 2017.

Trump has long slammed the Russia inquiry as a "witch hunt" — and did so again in London shortly before Rosenstein announced the indictments in Washington on Friday.

However, House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin has been hesitant to endorse efforts to impeach Rosenstein, Politico reports.
