Rep. Ron DeSantis of Florida has introduced an amendment to a spending package to limit Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe.

The amendment, reported on by The Hill on Monday, says that no money made available by the act could be used to fund Mueller's probe any later than 180 days after its enactment. The amendment also would apply to any "matters occurring before June 2015," which is when President Donald Trump first announced his candidacy.

Mueller was appointed special counsel in May by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to look into Russia's attempts to influence the U.S. presidential election and to see whether any members of Trump's team had improper contacts with Russian officials.

Mueller was appointed after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey and Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the probe.
