Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., must resign amid allegations of a sexual harassment scandal, according to the Detroit Free Press editorial board Wednesday.

The board acknowledged his congressional career, calling him a "legislator of uncommon influence."

However, revelations that alleged Conyers engaged in sexual harassment and then used taxpayer money for a settlement show that Conyers must exit the job, the board wrote.

"It is the kind of behavior that can never be tolerated in a public official, much less an elected representative of the people," the board wrote.

"His tenure as a member of Congress must end — now."

"It's a tragic end to his public career. But it's the appropriate consequence for the stunning subterfuge his office has indulged here, and a needed warning to other members of Congress that this can never be tolerated."

Conyers denied that he settled a sexual harassment complaint.

Another former staffer of the congressman alleged sexual harassment by Conyers on Tuesday.
