Sen. Dianne Feinstein issued a stern warning to President Donald Trump on Friday that Congress won't stand for the firing of special counsel Robert Mueller.
"It's very unfortunate that this president doesn't respect the law or the Constitution, and if he fires Bob Mueller, I expect Congress won't stand for it and will take action," Feinstein, a California Democrat, said in a statement, The Hill reports.
Feinstein made the comments after The New York Times reported that Trump was set to lower the boom on Mueller last summer, but backed down after White House counsel Don McGahn threatened to resign.
Feinstein is a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, which like Mueller, is looking into Russia's interference with the 2016 presidential election and whether the Trump campaign played a role in it.
Asked about The Times report on Friday, Trump said, "Fake news, folks. Fake news. Typical New York Times fake stories," Ty Cobb, a Trump attorney, said in a statement, "We decline to comment out of respect for the Office of the Special Counsel and its process."
