The Democratic National Committee (DNC) said President Donald Trump must "immediately" fire his son-in-law from his position as a senior White House adviser following reports he attempted to secure a private communications channel between Russia and the president's transition team, The Hill reported Friday.

"Trump has no choice but to immediately fire Kushner, whose failure to report this episode on his security clearance is reason enough for a criminal investigation," DNC deputy communications director Adrienne Watson said in a statement.

"The next question is whether the President authorized this, because no one stands between Trump and Kushner on the chain of command," she added.

Kushner proposed the idea to Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during a meeting in early December, The Washington Post reported Friday, citing unnamed U.S. officials. The White House disclosed the meeting in March.

Kushner's activities are under investigation as part of the FBI's ongoing probe into claims of collusion between Trump campaign officials and the Russian government.
