President Donald Trump's support in Iowa, where he won the 2016 election, is decreasing and there's a chance the state could flip back to blue for the 2020 election.
The Washington Post spoke with Iowa state politicians who said Trump could be in trouble in The Hawkeye State.
"If Trump were to run again, he'd be in deep trouble," state Sen. Janet Petersen, a Democrat who serves as the Senate minority leader, told the Post. "A dog bites you the first time, it's not your fault. The second time it bites you, it's your own damn fault."
A recent poll showed Trump's approval rating among Iowans has sunk to 40 percent. He finished second to Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, in the 2016 Republican primary and later won Iowa's six Electoral College votes in the general election.
Iowans' drop in support for the president comes despite lower unemployment rates and an upcoming decrease in personal and corporate tax rates.
Iowa's Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds has even begun trying to convince the Trump administration to ease up on efforts to change trade deals.
"Whenever we talk about pulling out, commodity prices are affected immediately, and that will be one of the first casualties that we'll see," Reynolds said in December, according to the Post. "So we're going to hold them accountable."
Iowa voted for Republican presidential candidates in nearly every election, save for a handful, until 1988. Since then, voters have chosen the Republican candidate just twice — in 2004 and 2016.
The same poll mentioned above found that 40 percent of Iowans already have decided to vote for the Democratic candidate in the midterm elections later this year, compared to 34 percent who said they would vote Republican.
