President Donald Trump said Friday that he was working "very quickly" on a security agreement with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull "so we don't have to impose steel or aluminum tariffs on our ally."
Trump tweeted the information, a day after signing declarations to impose duties of 25 percent on imported steel and 10 percent on aluminum at the White House:
At the signing, Trump said that the tariffs would take effect in 15 days and would initially exempt Canada and Mexico.
Other security and trade partners also could negotiate to seek exemptions, the president said.
