President Donald Trump on Saturday said he only destroys the career of Republican lawmakers after they say bad things about him, “and you fight back and they go down the tubes and that’s OK.”
“A couple of them,” Trump said during a rally in Ohio at the Lewis Center without mentioning names. “It’s alright. I don’t mention names. I never mention names. I’ve become much more diplomatic. A year ago, two years ago, I would have mentioned names. I don’t do that anymore.”
Trump was talking about Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanugh, who he said should be confirmed without a problem.
“I think he’s going to get there, but to get him approved – because we have one vote who won’t be able to vote unfortunately – to get Justice Kavanaugh approved you need 100 percent of the Republican vote. How bad is that? How do you get 100 percent of anything?
Trump in June opposed GOP Rep. Mark Sanford, who went down in the South Carolina primary following a highly critical tweet by the president.
The president also backed Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp over Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle in a Republican runoff in the race for Georgia governor, and Kemp won. Trump pointed to Kemp's tough stance on illegal immigration and strong support for gun rights, and Vice President Mike Pence with days left in the race stumped for Kemp on the campaign trail.
Trump during the rally also praised Fox News and slammed MSNBC and CNN.
“Oftentimes I’m getting ready to do the fake news with CNN or MSNBC — MSNBC is so corrupt it’s so disgusting,” Trump said per a report in the Hill.
“I would say they’re almost, they’re worst,” he said. “They’re really a fake news group of people.”
“Here’s the good news the guys that we love, they’re blowing them away in the ratings,” Trump said, before listing a series of Fox News hosts, including Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Tucker Carlson and “the great Lou Dobbs."
“CNN is down at the bottom of the totem pole, MSNBC isn’t even close to being next to these shows,” Trump said. “So we’re blowing them away, and that’s good because those are the people that love us.”
