Hillary Clinton blasted her presidential rival Donald Trump at Monday's debate, saying she hopes the "fact checkers are turning up the volume and really working hard: Donald supported the invasion of Iraq."
"Wrong," Trump interjected.
"That is proved over and over again," Clinton continued.
The question has been a sticking point in the campaign, with Trump calling the allegation "mainstream media nonsense" put out by Clinton's campaign.
"I was against the war in Iraq," Trump said.
Moderator Lester Holt countered the record shows otherwise, but Trump disagreed.
"The record shows that I'm right," he said. "When I did an interview with Howard Stern, very lightly, first time anyone's asked me that, I said very lightly, I don't know, maybe, who knows, essentially."
Trump said in a later interview with Fox News Channel's Neil Cavuto he opposed the war, but no one talks about it. He said he also argued with Fox's Sean Hannity about it in private. Hannity was in favor of the war, and says Trump is telling the truth.
Hannity is a vocal supporter of Trump's candidacy.
