Donald Trump has jumped to a 14-point lead over Hillary Clinton in Missouri, reflecting a red-state trend of GOP leaning voters "coming home to support their party's nominee," a new poll shows.
In the Monmouth University survey released Tuesday, 52 percent of likely voters support Trump and 38 percent back Clinton — a big surge from his five-point lead of 46 percent to 41 percent over Clinton in October and their near-tie in August, when Trump had 44 percent and Clinton 43 percent.
The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.
"In a trend we have seen in other red states, Republican leaning voters in Missouri look like they are coming home to support their party's nominee despite any misgivings they may have about him," Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, said in a statement.
In other findings:
- Trump is viewed favorably by 39 percent and unfavorably by 51 percent.
- Clinton has a 29 percent favorable rating and a 63 percent unfavorable rating.
- 87 percent of respondents said the reopening of an FBI investigation of Clinton's private email server has had no impact on their vote.
"Most of those voters who are swayed by the latest bombshell have moved into Trump's camp, but some actually side with Clinton now," Murray said in the statement. "The bottom line is that the net impact of the FBI news is contributing no more than one or two points to Trump's overall margin here."
