Evangelicals, who continue to be concerned about Donald Trump's candidacy, are lining up — reluctantly — to support the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
"It's not an issue of embracing him," Calvin Morrow, executive director of Christians Uniting for Political Action,
told a reporter for the Washington bureau of McClatchy newspapers. "It's an issue of, ‘Oh, what the heck. We're stuck with him.' "
While not enthusiastically backing Trump, evangelicals are more fearful of Hillary Clinton and continue to hold out hope that Trump will appoint a conservative to the U.S. Supreme Court, the McClatchy website reports.
"That is for me the thing that keeps me hopeful," Steve Patterson, director of mission at the Spring River Baptist Association, a collection of 50 Southern Baptist congregations in Joplin, Missouri told McClatchy. "He (Trump) does not show himself to have the character that I would normally vote for, but . . . I'm not voting for a Sunday school teacher. I'm voting for a president."
And Trump continues to
court skeptical evangelicals, NBC News is reporting. He is due to speak on Friday before the Faith and Freedom Conference, a conference of the largest Christian voter mobilization organization in the country.
"Now as he turns to the general election, Trump faces a complicated relationship with this sizable voting bloc as he tries to consolidate and unify the Republican Party for a fight against a common foe — Hillary Clinton," the NBC News website notes.
