A day after a resounding loss in Wisconsin, Donald Trump holds a more than three-to-one lead over Ted Cruz among voters in his home state of New York,
according to the latest Monmouth University poll released Wednesday.
Here are the results of the survey of 302 Empire State Republicans, taken between Sunday and Tuesday:
- Trump: 52 percent.
- John Kasich: 25 percent.
- Cruz: 17 percent.
New York holds its primary on April 19 with 95 delegates at stake. Trump needs 1,237 delegates to avoid a contested Republican National Convention in Cleveland in July.
"If this result holds in every single congressional district, Trump will walk away with nearly all of New York State's delegates," said Monmouth University polling director Patrick Murray.
Cruz handed Trump a big loss in the Wisconsin primary on Tuesday, 48 to 35 percent, while Kasich finished last, with 14 percent.
However, when New Yorkers were asked which Republican has the best chance of beating Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, Kasich fared the best:
- Kasich: 81 percent.
- Trump: 70 percent.
- Cruz: 66 percent.
"It is interesting that Kasich would be a stronger nominee in Trump's home state, but it is purely academic," Murray said. "There is almost no probability that any Republican would be able to win New York's electoral votes."
