The vote recount and lawsuits winding their way through the courts in Georgia are revealing several factors that must be fixed in the state's election system before the Jan. 5 Senate runoff races, Rep. Doug Collins said Monday.
"If we had not asked for the hand recount we wouldn't have found a bunch of voters that [had not been] counted," the Georgia Republican said on Fox Business' "Mornings With Maria." "We found issues with observers and weakening the signature verifications that were done on a consent order down here that makes it harder to verify the signatures of the applicants. We saw a lot of increase in absentee ballots down here."
The runoff races are pitting Republican Sen. David Perdue against Democrat Jon Ossoff and GOP Sen. Kelly Loeffler against Democrat challenger Raphael Warnock in races that could determine which party controls the Senate.
"It's a very important election not just for the state of Georgia but for the country," said Collins, noting that there are important issues involved and that Democrats will "use every procedural trick on the book" to reverse the gains made under President Donald Trump.
Collins also said he hopes Trump's lawsuits will be fairly heard and considered.
"Especially the Pennsylvania case, hopefully, the Supreme Court will order it back to be heard and then the president can make his case," said Collins. "This is just following the legal precedents that are making sure every legal vote is counted, and we make sure there was clarity in the election. I think the president deserves that."
