Former House Speaker and Trump adviser Newt Gingrich is walking back comments he made about the Trump campaign's slogan "Drain the Swamp" – admitting he made a "big boo-boo."
In his NPR interview, Gingrich said he was "told [President-elect Donald Trump] now just disclaims" the slogan. "He now says it was cute, but he doesn't want to use it anymore . . . he's in a different role now."
Trump disagreed. Without calling out Gingrich by name, the president-elect tweeted Thursday "we will always be trying to DTS."
Gingrich posted a video on Twitter correcting his mistake.
"I want to report that I made a big booboo," Gingrich said in the video. "I talked this morning with President-elect Donald Trump, and he reminded me: He likes 'Drain The Swamp,' and I mischaracterized it the other day. He intends to drain the swamp and even describes it as 'DTS.'
"He thinks that taking on Boeing, and the price [of the new Air Force One] is an example of draining the swamp," Gingrich added. "So, I want you to know I goofed. Draining the swamp is in. The alligators should be worried. And you'll hear me write more about alligators and the swamp."
