Former House speaker Newt Gingrich took to Twitter early Saturday calling for a new national debate on "fake education" — an issue, he says is "underlying" President Trump's "fake news" dialogue.

"President Trump is on to a very big historic dialogue about fake news. Underlying fake news is fake education. We need a national debate on this," Gingrich tweeted.

Gingrich, an adviser to Trump during and after the campaign cheered Trump's pick, Betsy DeVos, to run the Education Department. And, when the Senate confirmed DeVos, Gingrich tweeted that it was "a real victory for parents and children choosing schools they need."

However, before the inauguration, Gingrich told ABC News that his biggest fear about the Trump administration is they might "lose their nerve" on certain issues, including education.

"I mean, if you're serious about school choice, there is no agreement with the teachers' unions," Gingrich said.
