Vice President Mike Pence has the authority to reject the Electoral College results, President Donald Trump tweeted on Tuesday.

“The Vice President has the power to reject fraudulently chosen electors,” the president wrote.

His tweet followed a report in The New York Times that Pence wants to raise the issue of election fraud during Wednesday's joint session of Congress, despite not having the authority to affect the outcome.

Trump, during his appearance in Dalton, Georgia, on Monday to press for the election of the two Republican candidates for Senate in Tuesday’s runoff election, stressed the importance of Pence, who, as vice president, is set to oversee the certification of the Electoral College vote.

"I hope Mike Pence comes through for us, I have to tell you," Trump said. "I hope that our great vice president, our great vice president, comes through for us. He's a great guy. Of course, if he doesn't come through, I won't like him as much."

According to the Times, the role of the vice president in certifying the Electoral College is largely ceremonial.
