Sen. Elizabeth Warren's supporters have expressed pleasure at the news that she had a private meeting with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, describing it as a positive step forward for economic populism,
The New York Times reported.
The Times reported Tuesday that Clinton held a private, one-on-one meeting with the Massachusetts Democrat in December to ask Warren more about her policy ideas.
"It is positive news that Hillary Clinton is meeting with Elizabeth Warren and other progressives
— and it will be even more positive news if economic populist thinkers are appointed to her inner circle," Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, told the Times.
Green added that Democrats would be better placed to win the general election in 2016 if they adopted Warren's economic position of expanding Social Security and targeting big financial institutions.
Warren has repeatedly said she has no plans to run for president next year.
The meeting was initiated by Clinton and took place at Clinton's home in Washington, without aides, according to the Times.
A Democrat briefed on the meeting, called it "cordial and productive," and it is understood that Clinton did not ask Warren to consider endorsing her likely presidential candidacy.
