Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., leads GOP challenger Liz Cheney 55 to 21 percent as he seeks re-election next year, according to a
Conservative Intel poll.
The survey was conducted July 17-18 by Harper Polling. It included 422 likely Republican voters.
The decision of Cheney, a political commentator and daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, to enter the race against a popular incumbent has drawn criticism from some Republicans. She recently moved to Wyoming from Virginia.
When it comes to favorability, 76 percent of voters view Enzi favorably, and 6 percent view him unfavorably. Cheney received a favorable review from 45 percent of voters and an unfavorable review from 15 percent. In addition, 40 don't have an opinion of her.
To be sure, the poll was conducted with an automated format, and such surveys are historically less accurate than those performed with live telephone calls, according to
The Hill. The poll has a 4.8-percentage-point margin of error.
Still, Cheney faces an uphill battle, says
Harper Polling CEO Brock McCleary. "What the poll does makes abundantly clear is that she is going to have to prosecute a vigorous case against the sitting Senator, because the jury is skeptical at the outset that a change of representation in the Senate is needed," he told Conservative Intel.
