Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams says he will carry a gun if he’s elected mayor of New York City rather than have his own security detail.
Adams, a Democrat and a former police officer, made his remarks on the FAQ NYC podcast on Wednesday.
Asked if he would carry a gun as mayor, Adams replied: “Yes I will, number one. And number two, I won’t have a security detail. If the city is safe, the mayor shouldn’t have a security detail with him. He should be walking the street by himself.”
Current Mayor Bill de Blasio has a security detail provided by a unit of the New York Police Department, the New York Post noted. The detail accompanies the mayor everywhere -- even when he travels overseas.
The newspaper said the NYPD has refused to disclose how much money is being spent on the security detail.
