Facebook is vowing not use the powerful social media platform to sink Donald Trump's presidential bid — pushing back against a report of an internal discussion on the idea.
According to Gizmodo, some Facebook workers used a company poll to ask CEO Mark Zuckerberg whether the company should try "to help prevent President Trump in 2017."
The website posted a screenshot of the poll question, explaining it came in March in answer to the company's query on what employees wanted to ask Zuckerberg in a question-and-answer session.
"If Facebook decided to, it could gradually remove any pro-Trump stories or media off its site — devastating for a campaign that runs on memes and publicity," Gizmodo's Michael Nunez writes. "Facebook wouldn’t have to disclose it was doing this, and would be protected by the First Amendment."
On Friday, Facebook insisted it's neutral in the White House – and any other – political race.
"Voting is a core value of democracy and we believe that supporting civic participation is an important contribution we can make to the community," Facebook said in a
statement to Business Insider.
"We encourage any and all candidates, groups, and voters to use our platform to share their views on the election and debate the issues. We as a company are neutral — we have not and will not use our products in a way that attempts to influence how people vote."
Zuckerberg, who has championed immigration reform, earlier this week took a not-so-subtle
shot at Trump during a company conference in San Francisco, warning "fearful voices calling for building walls… slowing immigration, reducing trade… even even cutting access to the internet."
