President Donald Trump's former adviser on Russia and Europe Fiona Hill reportedly told Congress that ex-national security adviser John Bolton was so alarmed over efforts to get Ukraine to provide political help that he called it a "drug deal," according to The New York Times.
Three people who heard Hill's testimony on Monday claimed she said Bolton got into a tense exchange in July with Gordon Sondland, U.S. ambassador to the European Union, who was working with the president's lawyer Rudy Giuliani to push Ukraine to investigate Democrats, the newspaper reported.
"I am not part of whatever drug deal Sondland and [acting chief of staff Mick] Mulvaney are cooking up," Bolton told Hill to tell White House lawyers, according to two people.
A third person initially said Bolton referred to Giuliani and Mulvaney, but two others said he cited Sondland, the Times said.
Bolton had also reportedly expressed concerns to Hill during an earlier conversation.
"Giuliani's a hand grenade who's going to blow everybody up," Hill reportedly quoted Bolton as saying.
Giuliani has said he asked a Ukrainian prosecutor for information on former Vice President Joe Biden, NBC News noted.
Trump fired Bolton in September.
