Republican presidential candidate John Kasich was endorsed Friday by former U.S. Sen. George Voinovich of Ohio.

"John shares my values and is a good and decent human being that tries to give witness to the second great commandment, 'Love thy neighbor as thyself,'" said Voinovich, who also served two terms in the Ohio Statehouse. "He possesses the integrity, empathy, emotional intelligence, judgement, vision, passion, and courage that are necessary in a great leader."

Voinovich, who was named a delegate to the Republican National Convention next August in Cleveland, said he had studied the platforms of all the GOP contenders and concluded that Kasich was "the most qualified Republican primary candidate to be president of the United States."

After serving as the Buckeye State's governor from 1991 to 1998, Voinovich spent three terms in the Senate. He also has been lieutenant governor, a state representative and Cleveland's mayor.

He supported Kasich's run for the GOP primary in 1999.
