Former President George W. Bush made critical comments regarding the Trump administration's travel ban on North Koreans during a private dinner Thursday night.

Business Insider cited a source who said Bush never mentioned President Donald Trump by name or the actual ban, but he cited past U.S. policies involving North Korea during a question-and-answer session at the annual dinner of The Korea Society in New York City.

The source told Business Insider Bush hinted that the Trump administration's policy banning immigrants and nonimmigrants from North Korea could discourage people from trying to defect from the rogue nation.

Bush also referenced the North Korean Human Rights Act he signed in 2004.

Bush was given The Korea Society's Van Fleet Award at the dinner that included more than 400 people.

Moderating the Q&A session was Victor Cha, a former Bush adviser and the likely nominee to serve as U.S. ambassador to South Korea in the Trump administration.
