Democrats have lost their advantage over Republicans in a generic congressional ballot – holding on to just a 3-point edge that is within the margin of error, a new CNN poll showed Wednesday.
CNN reported the advantage contrasts with a 16-point lead Democrats held in a February survey.
According to the survey conducted by SSRS, 47 percent of registered voters say they back the Democratic candidate in their district, 44 percent back the GOP contender.
Voters also are divided nearly evenly on which party should control Congress, with 31 percent favoring Democrats in power and 30 percent preferring GOP control; 34 percent say it does not matter which party controls Congress, the poll found.
According to CNN, the Democratic advantage dipped from 16 points in February to 6 points in March to just 3 points in the latest survey.
Conversely, enthusiasm for the GOP has grown, increasing from 36 percent of GOP voters very enthusiastic about casting their ballots in March, to 44 percent saying so in the new poll.
In other findings, the survey also found, 48 percent to 43 percent, registered voters say they would rather back a candidate who opposes President Donald Trump than one who supports the president. That margin has narrowed from the 52 percent who opposed Trump to the 41 percent who supported him in January.
