Jeff Sessions will stay loyal to Donald Trump despite rising tensions with the president regarding his decision to recuse himself from the Russia investigation, senators close to the attorney general told The Hill.

"I really believe their relationship is good and a lot of people aren't happy with that and will try to use all the quotes they can to make it look bad," said Republican Sen. James Inhofe, one of Sessions's closest friends in the Senate.

"I would be disappointed but I'd be more surprised," Inhofe said of the likelihood of Sessions stepping down. "It's just not going to happen."

Sessions allegedly offered to resign from his post because of the rift with the president. His decision in March to recuse himself from the investigation between Trump's campaign and Russia was not known to Trump until moments before it occurred.

Sources told The New York Times that Sessions offered to resign because he "needed the freedom to do his job."

Trump didn't take him up on the offer and some senators told the Hill he only did it to be respectful to the president.

"There's no rift there. Jeff was just being gracious," said Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch, who served with Sessions on the Judiciary Committee. "I know Jeff very well. There's no problem there."
