Sen. Lindsey Graham slammed White House aide Kelly Sadler for a mocking comment she made about the ailing Sen. John McCain.

"Ms. Sadler, may I remind you that John McCain has a lot of friends in the United States Senate on both sides of the aisle. Nobody is laughing in the Senate," Graham, R-SC, told CNN.

Sadler's comment was in reaction to McCain's opposition to President Donald Trump’s choice of Gina Haspel to lead the Central Intelligence Agency.

"It doesn’t matter, he’s dying anyway," Sadler said, a source familiar with the remarks said, The Hill reported.

A White House official told CNN that Sadler, who is in charge of surrogate communications, meant the comment as a joke "but it fell flat."

A Politico reporter said that Sadler called Meghan McCain to apologize for the remark.

Graham, a longtime friend of McCain’s, told CNN on Thursday that McCain is getting stronger after being hospitalized for surgery for a stomach infection.
